How Does the Overturning of Roe v. Wade Affect Women's Rights?

The reversal of Roe v. Wade by the Supreme Court has sparked concerns regarding its implications for women’s rights and access to abortion.

Keep reading to understand the implications of this ruling and your options as a woman in Illinois.

What Does the Supreme Court’s Overruling Mean?

In 1973, the Supreme Court issued a landmark decision affirming that a woman’s right to abortion was constitutionally protected under the U.S. Constitution. This ruling granted abortion protection as a federal right. Prior to 1973, abortion laws were always determined on a state-by-state decision.

However, in the summer of 2022, the Supreme Court reexamined this case and determined that the original ruling lacked sufficient justification.

As a result, the reversal of this law removed the federal protection previously afforded to abortion. This means that the authority to regulate or safeguard access to abortion now rests with each state.
